A spokesperson for the festival confirmed the situation, stating, “Leonardo DiCaprio is unable to join us in person tonight due to unexpected travel disruptions and restricted airspace. While we will miss celebrating with him in person, we are honored to recognize his exceptional work and lasting contributions to cinema.” The festival had previously announced DiCaprio as a guest of honor, highlighting his impactful performance in the film.

The travel complications were linked to the U.S. military’s pre-dawn raid on January 3, which resulted in the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Following the raid, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed restrictions on flights in the area, leading to significant delays. An official announcement from the Palm Springs International Airport indicated that departing flights were subject to a ground stop due to an “FAA air traffic control issue.”

Shortly after the announcement, President Donald Trump held a press conference, detailing the military operation and the subsequent charges against Maduro, which include “narco-terrorism conspiracy” and “cocaine importation conspiracy.” Trump asserted that the U.S. would oversee Venezuela until a “safe, proper and judicious transition” could be ensured.

The impact of the military action extended beyond DiCaprio, as many travelers faced similar disruptions. The Palm Springs International Airport reported that flights were grounded for approximately four hours before the restrictions were lifted around 16:20 PT.

Despite DiCaprio’s absence, the event featured a star-studded lineup, including actors Timothée Chalamet, Michael B. Jordan, Adam Sandler, and Kate Hudson, all of whom attended the gala to celebrate achievements in filmmaking.
