Menemsha Films Secures North American Rights for ‘The Soundman’

Menemsha Films has acquired the North American distribution rights for the Belgian drama The Soundman, following its successful premiere at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January 2024. The film, directed by Frank Van Passel, highlights the struggles faced by Belgian Jews during the impending German invasion, weaving a poignant love story set against the backdrop of the radio broadcasting industry.

Set in the historic Maison de la Radio Flagey in Brussels, where the National Institute for Radio Broadcasting (NIR) was located, the narrative follows Elza, portrayed by Femke Vanhove. As a young actress stepping into the world of radio drama, she encounters Berre, a talented soundman known for his extraordinary auditory skills. Their romance unfolds amid the growing turmoil of war, emphasizing the emotional stakes of their decisions.

The film features a strong supporting cast, including Koen De Bouw from the television series Professor T and Peter Van den Begin, known for his role in The King of the Belgians. This project marks a significant return to theatrical features for Van Passel, who previously gained acclaim for his works such as Mannekin Pis and Villa des Roses. His recent projects also include the mystery thriller series Moresnet.

Negotiations for the acquisition were conducted by Neil A. Friedman of Menemsha Films and Tine Klint of LevelK. The film is produced by Caviar, a production company known for its work on acclaimed films like Sound of Metal and The Rider.
