Russell Crowe and Henry Cavill’s ‘Man of Steel’ Soars on Streaming
The superhero film Man of Steel, starring Russell Crowe and Henry Cavill, has emerged as a surprising streaming success more than a decade after its release. The film, which debuted on June 14, 2013, continues to attract viewers globally, ranking in the top 10 on various Video on Demand (VOD) platforms across over 10 countries.
Originally released to mixed reviews, Man of Steel garnered a box office total of $670 million, significantly surpassing its production budget of $225 million. While audiences have shown a more favorable reaction, reflected in a 75% rating on the audience-driven Popcornmeter, critics were less impressed, resulting in a score of only 57% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s darker portrayal of the iconic hero, Kal-El, did not resonate well with many long-time fans.
Directed by Zack Snyder, with a screenplay co-written by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer, the film marked the beginning of what fans refer to as the Snyder-Verse within the DC cinematic universe. Despite its financial success, the franchise struggled to maintain momentum following Man of Steel, with several planned sequels and spin-offs failing to materialize as expected.
Upcoming Reunion in ‘Highlander’
Crowe and Cavill are set to reunite on screen for the highly anticipated reboot of Highlander. Directed by Chad Stahelski, known for his work on the John Wick series, the film also features notable actors Karen Gillan and Dave Bautista. Originally slated to begin filming in late 2025, production has been delayed to 2026 due to an injury Cavill sustained during training.
As interest in superhero films continues to thrive, Man of Steel remains a significant entry in the genre’s history. Its ongoing popularity on streaming platforms speaks to the lasting appeal of its characters and story, despite the divisive critical reception it initially received.
Viewers can currently enjoy Man of Steel on HBO Max, while fans eagerly await the new chapter in the Highlander saga. The film’s developments highlight not only the enduring nature of these iconic characters but also the evolving landscape of cinematic storytelling in the streaming era.
