Comedy Show Promotes Mental Health Awareness in Loveland

The Yay! Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering open discussions about mental health, is set to host a comedy show in Loveland on October 6, 2023. Taking place at the Rialto Theater, this free event aims to encourage candid conversations about mental health while providing entertainment. It marks the beginning of a series of monthly open mic comedy nights at the Love Shack, a sober bar in the area.

The show will feature Rodney Norman, a nationally recognized standup comedian and social media personality, as the headliner. Local performers will also take the stage, sharing their personal experiences with mental health challenges. This initiative seeks to normalize conversations around these important issues through humor.

Aidan Park’s Journey and the Foundation’s Mission

Aidan Park, the founder and CEO of the Yay! Foundation, has a compelling backstory that shaped his commitment to mental health advocacy. Originally from South Korea and raised in San Francisco, Park’s journey into the world of comedy took a pivotal turn during a trip to Montana. There, he met a young aspiring comedian who dreamt of performing at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the young man struggled with alcohol and tragically took his own life after several months of mentorship from Park.

In the wake of this loss, Park, along with the young man’s best friend and girlfriend, established an annual standup comedy show in Libby, Montana, to honor his memory. This effort blossomed further when Park connected with a veteran living with PTSD. Together, they initiated a veteran’s comedy program that allowed participants to discuss their own mental health struggles in a supportive environment.

The success of these initiatives led to the creation of the Yay! Foundation, which aims to cultivate comedy as a means of addressing mental health across the United States. This Friday’s event in Loveland has been made possible through a grant from Larimer County Behavioral Health Services.

A Safe Space for Healing Through Laughter

The Love Shack, known for its alcohol-free environment, has emerged as a crucial venue for events like the Yay! Foundation’s monthly shows. Owner Han Cassera emphasizes the importance of creating a welcoming space for community members to explore sensitive topics like mental health and substance abuse without the presence of alcohol.

“Creating a safe environment allows people to feel more comfortable sharing their stories,” Cassera explained. “They don’t have to struggle looking for a space that maybe isn’t appropriate for their demographic.”

The event will start with a resource fair at 18:30, followed by the comedy show at 19:30. This dual approach not only entertains but also connects attendees with valuable mental health resources.

As the Yay! Foundation expands its reach, Loveland’s comedy show represents a significant step toward building community acceptance around mental health discussions, blending humor with healing in an inclusive setting.
