Funding Cuts Threaten Men’s Health Services at Planned Parenthood
Recent funding cuts to Planned Parenthood, particularly under the new provisions of H.R. 1, are jeopardizing essential health services for men. This shift has significant implications for individuals relying on these clinics for critical health care, including cancer screenings, STI testing, and reproductive health services.
George Roehr, a recent college graduate, experienced firsthand the importance of these services. After discovering a lump, he turned to Planned Parenthood for help. “I made an appointment for Planned Parenthood,” Roehr recalled. “Within seconds, [the doctor] felt it, looked at me and said, ‘You should go see a specialist.’” Just weeks later, Roehr started chemotherapy for testicular cancer, highlighting the life-saving capabilities of these facilities.
Impact of Funding Cuts on Services
Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, the largest affiliate in the United States, operates 30 health centers and served approximately 30,000 men from July 2024 through June 2025. Andrew Adams, the Chief of Staff and Head of Strategic Communications, emphasized that the clinic provides vital care, especially in areas like sexually transmitted infection testing and sexual reproductive health. “Men need that just as much as women do,” Adams stated.
With the implementation of H.R. 1 on July 4, 2024, Medicaid reimbursements for Planned Parenthood have been severely restricted. Jodi Hicks, CEO of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, noted that these funding changes have already led to cuts in services and the closure of several clinics throughout California. Adams revealed that Mar Monte has experienced financial losses of up to $6.5 million per month in reimbursable care, forcing the organization to reconsider its planned expansion of vasectomy services.
Challenges in Accessing Health Care
Planned Parenthood’s services extend to a diverse range of health concerns, including erectile dysfunction, male infertility screening, and preventive HIV medication. Despite the availability of these services, men are statistically less likely to utilize routine health care. Data from the National Health Interview Survey, as reported in the CDC’s National Health Statistics Report No. 211, indicates that men often delay seeking preventive services due to factors such as stigma and embarrassment.
Research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) corroborates these findings, revealing that men often hesitate to seek care for issues like low libido and anxiety surrounding sexual health. With millions of cases of STIs reported annually in the U.S., the need for accessible testing and treatment is more critical than ever. Public health experts note that encouraging men to seek routine care is vital for controlling infections.
To address these challenges, Planned Parenthood has launched outreach campaigns aimed at reshaping perceptions of their services. Adams noted that recent campaigns featured men to emphasize that the clinics are open to anyone in need. These efforts included advertisements in public transit systems and local venues, designed to reach a wider audience.
The closure of Melody Health, a primary care arm of Planned Parenthood in Southern California, underscores the precarious nature of health care access for men. This facility previously provided essential medical care for thousands, including mental health support and chronic disease management. Its dismantling was a direct result of the federal funding cuts affecting Planned Parenthood affiliates.
Roehr’s experience serves as a reminder of the critical role these clinics play in the health care landscape. Reflecting on his treatment, he urged others not to hesitate in seeking help. “Don’t be afraid to get treatment,” he advised. “Planned Parenthood was just another outlet for wellness for me, and it made all the difference.”
As funding challenges continue, the future of vital health services at Planned Parenthood remains uncertain, impacting not only women but also men who rely on these essential resources for their health and well-being.
