James Earl Powers, Celebrated Journalist and Sports Enthusiast, Dies at 68

James Earl Powers, a prominent journalist and dedicated sports enthusiast, passed away peacefully at home on December 9, 2025, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. He was 68 years old. He spent his final moments surrounded by loved ones, leaving behind a legacy of passion for writing and sports.

Born on July 11, 1957, in Illinois, Jim Powers grew up in Wilmette, where he developed a love for the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. This passion for local sports would remain with him throughout his life, influencing both his personal and professional choices. After graduating from New Trier East High School in 1975, Powers went on to obtain a degree from Illinois State University in 1979. He furthered his education by earning a Master’s in Education from Grand Canyon University in 2002.

His career in journalism began shortly after graduation with the Des Plaines Journal. Over the years, Powers contributed to various publications, including U-Haul International, Ahwatukee Foothills News, and Palm Springs Life. Known for his engaging writing style, he often covered sports stories, fulfilling his lifelong dream of combining his love for writing and sports.

Legacy Beyond Journalism

In addition to his writing career, Powers was an avid player of pickleball, a sport he embraced later in life. He was instrumental in organizing leagues and tournaments, encouraging many to take up the game. His enthusiasm for pickleball was rivaled only by his love for the Star Wars franchise, which he shared with friends and family.

Powers retired from Palm Springs Life in November 2022 but remained active in his community. In December of that year, he took a part-time position at the Acrisure Arena, where he enjoyed watching the Coachella Valley Firebirds and attending numerous concerts. His brief retirement also allowed him to travel, including a memorable trip to Costa Rica in 2022.

Jim’s passing leaves a significant void in the lives of his loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and Warren Powers, and his cherished dog, Zoe, who passed away in December 2021. He is survived by his partner of 11 years, Harry Davis, as well as his siblings: Judy Peelo and her husband, David; William “Bill” Powers and his wife, Glenna; Janis Benzuly; and Chris Powers. Each of his siblings has children who will carry on his spirit and love for life.
