Remembering Arla Marie Chalmers: A Life of Love and Service

Arla Marie Chalmers, aged 81, passed away on November 11, 2025, following a courageous four-year struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born on July 30, 1944, she was adopted by Helen Peterson, affectionately known as Gaboo to her grandchildren, and her husband Arthur Funk. Arla’s journey began in San Francisco, California, before she later moved to Sacramento, where she married Meridith Albert Funk and welcomed two sons, Brian Elliott Funk and Steven Douglas Funk.

In the 1970s, Arla relocated to Santa Cruz, California, with her then-husband, Byron Esten Danzer. Here, she expanded her family to include a daughter, Michelle Lynn Danzer, and a cherished red poodle named Rudy. Arla’s home became a haven filled with joy and laughter, where she often acted as a second mother to many of her children’s friends.

Arla dedicated a significant part of her career to assisting individuals in securing safe and stable housing. She worked for the Housing Authority of Santa Cruz County, where she played a vital role in helping countless citizens, particularly women, navigate the challenges of housing accessibility. Later, she transitioned to the private sector as a respected mortgage broker, known for her integrity and commitment to her clients.

Her personal interests included water skiing and reading, with fond memories of relaxing with a good book while her family enjoyed skiing in Tahoe. As technology advanced, Arla embraced the convenience of a Kindle, allowing her to continue her love for literature. A passionate traveler, she explored destinations like Cabo San Lucas before it became a tourist hotspot, as well as Hong Kong and various countries across Europe.

Arla found companionship in Jim Chalmers, a Certified Public Accountant. The couple enjoyed a fulfilling life together in Yuba City, California, retiring there and spending 25 happy years until Jim’s passing in October 2021. She was also preceded in death by her eldest son, Brian Funk.

Arla is survived by her son, Dr. Steven Funk; her daughter, Michelle Danzer; her daughter-in-law, Lenie Ensign; and her son-in-law, Mark Jon Bluth. Additionally, she leaves behind her grandchildren, Matt Funk, Destiny Funk, Daniel Funk, and Ashley Ensign. She is also survived by her stepdaughters, Christy Chamberlain and Jenna Toth, along with their husbands, John Chamberlain and Dan Toth, and Jenna and Dan’s children.

Arla’s legacy of love, guidance, and fierce honesty will be profoundly missed by all who knew her. A Memorial Luncheon and Paddle Out will be held in her honor on January 24, from 12:00 to 15:00 PT at The Crow’s Nest Harbor Room, located at 2218 East Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz, CA 95062.
