The shifting perspective comes as new evidence indicates that any form of alcohol consumption, including red wine, does not contribute to improved health compared to abstaining altogether. Research has shown that even moderate drinking—defined as up to two drinks per day for men and one for women—carries risks. These risks include an increased likelihood of developing certain cancers, such as breast and colorectal cancer, as well as cognitive decline, heart issues, and sleep disturbances.

Guidance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture has evolved, with recent recommendations suggesting that even within established limits, alcohol consumption may heighten the overall risk of mortality from various causes. In contrast, the American Heart Association has advised that individuals should consider limiting or abstaining from alcohol altogether, despite a 2025 review suggesting light drinking may pose no risk for conditions like coronary artery disease and stroke. This conclusion, however, is not universally accepted among experts.

The argument in favor of red wine often relied on its polyphenol content, including compounds such as resveratrol and anthocyanins, which have been linked to potential health benefits. Yet, most of the favorable outcomes noted in studies involve doses significantly higher than those achievable through moderate wine consumption. Eric Rimm, a professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, pointed out that the concentrations of beneficial compounds in red wine are insufficient to yield meaningful health benefits unless consumed in excessive amounts, which could lead to other health problems.

For those seeking alternatives to gain the advantages of these polyphenols, Rimm suggests incorporating foods rich in antioxidants, such as darker berries, apples, onions, and even dark chocolate, into one’s diet instead of relying on red wine.

As alcohol content in beverages varies, particularly with craft beers and high-proof spirits, consumers should be mindful of their choices.

Lastly, it is important to recognize that men and women metabolize alcohol differently, with women generally producing less of the enzyme necessary for alcohol breakdown, resulting in a higher risk of health complications related to alcohol consumption.
