Understanding Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Diseases
Cardiovascular diseases pose significant health risks worldwide. Recent insights from Dr. Jake Forman, a vascular surgical specialist at WellSpan, underscore the critical distinction between cardiovascular and vascular health. While cardiovascular pertains to both the heart and blood vessels, vascular specifically refers to the blood vessels throughout the body, including arteries and veins.
The heart often receives the most attention in discussions about cardiovascular health. Nonetheless, vascular health is equally vital, as blood vessels play a crucial role in ensuring proper blood flow. Dr. Forman explained, “A vascular surgeon is a blood vessel specialist; we take care of everything except for the heart and the brain.” This includes addressing issues related to arteries in limbs and the aorta, which distributes blood to the body.
Role of Vascular Surgeons in Disease Prevention
Vascular surgeons are integral to stroke prevention and managing conditions that threaten limb viability due to advanced vascular disease. As Dr. Forman describes, “We’re essentially fancy plumbers. We deal with leaks and clogs inside of the arteries.” This specialized care is particularly important in cases of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), which often goes unnoticed until severe symptoms arise.
PAD can lead to severe complications, including the risk of limb loss. Dr. Forman emphasized the need for screening, particularly for individuals with existing heart disease. “It’s really important for folks that have blockages in the heart to be screened for things like this,” he stated, highlighting the shared risk factors between heart and vascular diseases.
Key risk factors for vascular disease include high blood pressure, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and smoking. Dr. Forman noted, “It’s the wear and tear from smoking that affects all of your arteries because it causes them to harden and constrict.” Addressing these lifestyle factors is crucial in preventing the progression of vascular diseases.
Advances in Treatment Options
Treatment for vascular diseases has evolved significantly, ranging from traditional open surgery to innovative, minimally invasive methods. Dr. Forman mentioned that robotics are becoming a new frontier in vascular surgery, with the team at WellSpan recently completing their first robotic cases for aortic pathology. “These advances are expanding options, including less invasive treatments and improving recovery for many patients,” he noted.
As healthcare professionals continue to explore and implement these advancements, the focus remains on enhancing patient outcomes and addressing the critical risk factors associated with cardiovascular and vascular diseases. With a comprehensive understanding of these conditions, patients can take proactive steps toward better health.
