Milwaukee Bars Launch Fundraising Campaign for Addiction Recovery
More than 20 bars and restaurants in the Milwaukee area have joined forces with Meta House this January to support the organization’s mission of aiding women and children affected by substance use disorder. This initiative, known as the Dry January campaign, aims to raise the final $2.9 million required for Project Horizon, a significant campus expansion that will double Meta House’s residential capacity.
Meta House, a Milwaukee nonprofit, provides essential residential and outpatient addiction recovery services specifically tailored for women and children. According to Miriam, a grant writer at Meta House, the importance of having a safe place for women to seek help with their children cannot be overstated. “When a woman doesn’t have a safe place to go with her family, she’s much less likely to seek help for what she needs,” she said.
Supporting Addiction Recovery Through Mocktails
During January, participating establishments will promote alcohol-free mocktails while contributing to the cause in two ways. They will either donate $1 from every Dry January mocktail sold or display a QR code linking to Meta House’s Project Horizon donation page. This collaborative effort not only supports addiction recovery services but also encourages community engagement.
“More than 20 local bars and restaurants have collaborated with us to serve mocktails in the area. It’s a great opportunity to reduce the stigma against substance use disorder while trying new, exciting drinks,” said Miriam. Among the participating venues is Cloud Red in Shorewood, where bartender Ian highlighted the establishment’s commitment to community support.
“We really rely on the community to keep us afloat. Any chance we can get to give back and raise awareness for marginalized communities, we’re always happy to help,” Ian stated. Cloud Red is featuring its signature lavender haze mocktail, which is a creative twist on a Vesper martini, utilizing Empress NA gin, a lavender mint simple made in-house, lemon juice, and non-alcoholic sparkling wine.
Community Engagement and Awareness
The Dry January campaign offers a meaningful way for community members to engage with and support addiction recovery services while participating in a growing trend. As more individuals choose to abstain from alcohol during this month, the initiative helps raise vital funds and awareness for a pressing social issue.
The collaboration between local businesses and Meta House exemplifies the power of community in addressing substance use challenges. By enjoying alcohol-free mocktails, patrons not only indulge in creative beverages but also contribute to a cause that helps vulnerable populations in the Milwaukee area.
This initiative underscores the importance of accessible support for those struggling with addiction, particularly women and children. As the campaign progresses, it aims to foster a sense of community and support that extends beyond just January, creating a lasting impact on the lives of those it serves.
