Tatiana Schlossberg, Granddaughter of JFK, Dies at 35
Environmental journalist Tatiana Schlossberg, the granddaughter of former President John F. Kennedy, has passed away at the age of 35. Her death was announced on social media by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation on Tuesday, with the family stating, “Our beautiful Tatiana passed away this morning. She will always be in our hearts.” The announcement did not specify the cause of death or the location of her passing.
Schlossberg, the daughter of Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg, revealed her battle with terminal cancer in a November 2025 essay for The New Yorker. She had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in May 2024, shortly after the birth of her second child when doctors discovered elevated white blood cell counts. The leukemia she faced was accompanied by a rare mutation typically found in older patients.
Her Fight Against Cancer
In her essay titled “A Battle With My Blood,” Schlossberg detailed her experiences with multiple rounds of chemotherapy and two stem cell transplants. She also participated in clinical trials, sharing the grim prognosis given by her doctor, who stated he could potentially extend her life by one year. Throughout her journey, she expressed concern over healthcare policies supported by her mother’s cousin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Secretary of Health and Human Services, and criticized funding cuts that could affect cancer research.
“As I spent more and more of my life under the care of doctors, nurses, and researchers striving to improve the lives of others, I watched as Bobby cut nearly a half billion dollars for research into mRNA vaccines, technology that could be used against certain cancers,” she wrote.
Schlossberg was known for her work covering climate change and environmental issues for The New York Times. Her book, “Inconspicuous Consumption: The Environmental Impact You Don’t Know You Have,” received the Society of Environmental Journalists’ Rachel Carson Environment Book Award in 2020.
Family Legacy and Personal Reflections
In her poignant essay, Schlossberg expressed deep fears about her legacy, particularly concerning her young children. “I fear my daughter and son won’t remember me,” she wrote, lamenting the life she would miss with her husband, George Moran. She reflected on her family’s history of loss, noting that her mother was just five years old when her father was assassinated in Dallas in 1963 and ten when her uncle was killed in 1968.
Schlossberg’s siblings, Rose and Jack Schlossberg, are JFK’s other grandchildren. She conveyed the burden of adding another tragedy to her family’s history, feeling a mix of sadness and guilt. “For my whole life, I have tried to be good, to be a good student and a good sister and a good daughter, and to protect my mother and never make her upset or angry,” she noted. “Now I have added a new tragedy to her life, to our family’s life, and there’s nothing I can do to stop it.”
The passing of Tatiana Schlossberg not only marks the loss of a dedicated journalist but also a member of a family that has endured significant sorrow through the decades. Her contributions to environmental journalism and her personal fight against cancer will be remembered by many.
