A significant tribute unfolded at the Indiana Statehouse on January 29, 2024, as the House of Representatives passed House Concurrent Resolution 2, honoring the memory of the late Sgt. William Paterson. State Representative Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point), alongside Lake County Sheriff’s Officer Christopher Akey, led the initiative to rename a section of U.S. Highway 30 between mile markers 15 and 16 as the “Sergeant William Gilbert Paterson Memorial Mile.”

Sgt. Paterson, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty during a high-speed chase on January 25, 1994, served with dedication in the Lake County law enforcement. The resolution aims to ensure that his contributions and sacrifices are permanently recognized.

Olthoff expressed the gravity of the occasion, stating, “His sacrifice and legacy are something we must never forget.” This sentiment resonates deeply within the community, as local leaders emphasize the importance of honoring those who protect public safety.

The resolution, now awaiting consideration in the Senate, continues to garner support from various segments of the community and law enforcement. According to the Indiana House Republicans, renaming the highway serves not only as a tribute to Sgt. Paterson but also as a reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers daily.

As discussions move forward, the proposed “Sergeant William Gilbert Paterson Memorial Mile” stands as a testament to the enduring impact of his service and the commitment of Indiana to honor its heroes.
