Former Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, triggering a statement from King Charles III. The arrest occurred on February 19, 2023, as Thames Valley Police initiated an investigation into allegations surrounding the prince’s conduct. The police confirmed that Andrew remains in custody while they conduct searches at properties in Berkshire and Norfolk.

In a statement from Buckingham Palace, King Charles expressed his concern regarding his brother’s situation. He stated, “I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office. What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities. In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation. Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.” The king emphasized the importance of allowing the judicial process to unfold without interference.

Misconduct in public office is a serious offense, typically involving abuse or neglect of power by individuals in public roles, including elected officials and civil servants. The maximum penalty for this offense can reach life imprisonment, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Thames Valley Police noted that their assessment led to Andrew’s arrest, and they are committed to maintaining the integrity of the investigation. Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright remarked, “Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office. It is important that we protect the integrity and objectivity of our investigation as we work with our partners to investigate this alleged offense. We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time.”

The arrest adds to the scrutiny surrounding Andrew due to his past associations with the late Jeffrey Epstein, who was implicated in numerous allegations of sexual misconduct. Virginia Roberts Giuffre, a prominent accuser, has previously claimed that Andrew engaged in sexual acts with her when she was a minor, a claim he has consistently denied. Giuffre’s family responded to the news of the arrest, stating, “At last. Today, our broken hearts have been lifted at the news that no one is above the law, not even royalty.” They expressed gratitude to Thames Valley Police for their actions.

Andrew’s arrest marks a significant moment for the royal family, particularly given the ongoing concerns regarding his connections to Epstein and the implications for the monarchy. On his 66th birthday, which coincided with his arrest, Andrew has yet to be formally charged with any wrongdoing. Police are permitted to detain him for up to 96 hours before a decision must be made to charge or release him.

In recent years, Andrew’s reputation has been further tarnished by allegations of inappropriate behavior and his withdrawal from public duties. In October 2022, he announced that he would no longer use his royal title or the honors conferred upon him, stating, “As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.” Buckingham Palace later confirmed that King Charles had initiated a formal process to remove Andrew’s royal titles, officially designating him as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

As the investigation proceeds, it is clear that the implications of this case extend beyond Andrew himself, raising questions about accountability and the role of public figures in society. As the King stated, both he and his family remain committed to their duties while the legal process unfolds.
