NASA Prepares for Artemis 2 Rocket Fueling Test Ahead of Launch

NASA is set to conduct a critical fueling test for its Space Launch System (SLS) rocket on Monday, which is essential for the upcoming Artemis 2 mission scheduled to launch on February 8, 2024. This mission will carry four astronauts on a journey around the moon.

The countdown for the fueling test began on Saturday evening at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, despite rare sub-freezing temperatures. The test was delayed by two days due to predicted arctic weather conditions affecting Florida’s Space Coast. As a result, the launch date for Artemis 2 has shifted from February 6 to no earlier than the night of February 8, coinciding with Super Bowl Sunday.

Artemis 2 will be commanded by Reid Wiseman, alongside astronauts Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen from Canada. Currently, the crew is in pre-flight medical quarantine at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. If the fueling test proceeds without issues, they plan to travel to Florida later this week to finalize preparations for the mission.

Significance of the Fueling Test

During the test, the launch team intends to load over 750,000 gallons of supercold liquid oxygen and hydrogen fuel into the two stages of the SLS rocket. This rehearsal will ensure that the loading procedures are executed correctly and that the booster’s tanks and propellant system plumbing are free of leaks.

NASA explained in a blog post, “This test will run the launch team through a full range of operations, including loading cryogenic liquid propellant into the SLS rocket’s tanks, conducting a launch countdown, demonstrating the ability to recycle the countdown clock, and draining the tanks to practice scrub procedures.” These steps are crucial for ensuring the team’s readiness for the actual launch day.

The “wet dress” countdown is scheduled to begin with propellants flowing into the SLS rocket shortly after 11:00 a.m. EST on Monday. If successful, the tanks in the 177-foot-tall core stage and the 45-foot-tall Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) will be fully loaded and in “replenish” mode by approximately 4:30 p.m.

While the crew typically heads to the launch pad after fuel loading to prepare for liftoff, no astronauts will be on board during Monday’s test. Instead, engineers will simulate various scenarios, including potential launch scrubs due to technical or weather-related issues.

Upcoming Launch Opportunities

NASA faces a tight schedule with only five available launch opportunities in February due to the constantly changing positions of the Earth and moon, along with varying lighting conditions. The first two dates, February 6 and 7, are no longer options because of the delay in the fueling test. The remaining potential launch days are February 8, 10, and 11. Should technical issues or adverse weather prevent the SLS from launching by February 11, the Artemis 2 mission will be postponed to a new set of launch dates between March 6 and 11.

Launch Director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson expressed optimism, noting that improvements and upgrades based on previous lessons learned enhance the likelihood of a smooth fueling operation on Monday. The upcoming test is a vital step in NASA’s ambitious goal of returning humans to the moon and establishing a sustainable presence there.
