CNU Dominates Hood College with 16 Three-Pointers in 96-79 Win

Christopher Newport University (CNU) showcased a strong performance in men’s basketball, defeating Hood College 96-79 on Monday night. The game marked the opening of the Captains Shootout held at Freeman Center, where CNU excelled with their three-point shooting, draining a total of 16 shots from beyond the arc.

Tyson Henderson had an outstanding night, making all five of his three-point attempts and finishing with a career-high of 29 points. His precision from the perimeter contributed significantly to CNU’s success, particularly in the first half, where the team converted 12 of 24 attempts from three-point range. Toa Hollenbeck also shined, hitting four three-pointers and adding 27 points to the scoreboard for the Captains, who improved their season record to 10-3.

In the earlier game of the Captains Shootout, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) secured a close 71-66 victory over Johnson & Wales University from Charlotte. RIT, now standing at 3-4, is set to face CNU at 19:00 on Tuesday, while Hood will take on Johnson & Wales at 17:00 the same day.

In women’s basketball, the University of Virginia (UVA) triumphed over Southern Methodist University (SMU) with a score of 76-52. Kymora Johnson led the Cavaliers with 17 points, 10 assists, and six steals, marking her sixth career double-double. UVA, now 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), dominated the third quarter, outscoring SMU 22-7.

Virginia’s performance was further bolstered by Caitlin Weimer, who recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Tabitha Amanze contributed 11 points to ensure a solid win in their ACC home opener at John Paul Jones Arena.

As the season progresses, both CNU and UVA continue to build momentum, demonstrating their capabilities on the court and setting the stage for exciting matchups ahead.
