Steph Curry Set for Homecoming Showdown Against Hornets
On January 1, 2026, the Golden State Warriors will face the Charlotte Hornets in a highly anticipated matchup that promises to be a significant event for star player Stephen Curry. The game, which tips off at 10:00 PST, marks a special homecoming for Curry, who grew up just a short drive away in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Fans are expected to gather early at the Spectrum Center, eager to witness Curry’s renowned shooting routine before the game. Known for his generosity, Curry typically accommodates requests for autographs and photos. However, with the excitement surrounding this particular game, accommodating everyone may prove challenging.
Hometown Pride and Family Connections
Charlotte holds a special place in Curry’s heart. “I know when I go to Charlotte and see my family, and I know when I go to Toronto… so I circle those dates at the end of December,” Curry mentioned during his annual golf tournament this summer. The game is further enhanced by the presence of his brother, Seth Curry, who, despite dealing with an injury, will accompany the Warriors on this trip.
Historically, Curry has had a strong record in his hometown, with the Warriors winning eight out of twelve games played in Charlotte. Despite this success, Curry’s personal performance against the Hornets has been somewhat modest in recent years. He averages 27.3 points per game in Charlotte but has not scored 40 points in the Spectrum Center since the 2015-16 season, when he achieved that feat during his MVP year.
Hornets Struggling Defensively
The Hornets enter this matchup with a record of 11-20, placing them 12th in the Eastern Conference. Their struggles can largely be attributed to defensive weaknesses. Charlotte ranks near the bottom of the league in points allowed per game, averaging 118.5, and has the worst 3-point shooting defense, allowing opponents to shoot 38.4% from beyond the arc.
With a lineup featuring talented scorers such as LaMelo Ball and Collin Sexton, the Hornets have the offensive capability to challenge the Warriors. However, their defensive ratings indicate significant vulnerabilities that Curry and his teammates may exploit.
As the league’s leader in made 3-pointers with an average of 4.8 per game, Curry is playing at an All-NBA level. He has consistently scored at least 35 points in eight games this season and shares the record for the most 40-point games (44) by a player over the age of 30 with Michael Jordan.
After the New Year’s Eve festivities in Charlotte, the Warriors will return to the Bay Area to face the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder on January 2. As Curry looks to make a statement in front of his hometown crowd, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely for what could be a memorable performance.
