Jets to Part Ways with QB Justin Fields; Steelers Show Interest
The New York Jets are set to part ways with quarterback Justin Fields, who signed a $40 million contract last offseason. Fields struggled significantly during the season, dealing with injuries and underwhelming performance, leading to the Jets’ decision to opt out of his contract and allow him to enter free agency.
Fields, a former first-round draft pick, faced challenges while starting for the Jets, finishing the season with a record of 2-7. His tenure in New York was marred by inconsistency, further impacting his prospects as a starting quarterback in the NFL. Despite these setbacks, analysts believe Fields could find a new opportunity with the Pittsburgh Steelers, a team that previously expressed interest in him.
In a recent analysis, Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report highlighted the Steelers as a potential landing spot for the 26-year-old quarterback. According to Knox, Fields’ familiarity with the organization could offer him a fresh start. “Despite being a 26-year-old former first-round pick, Fields is likely running out of chances to be an NFL starter,” Knox noted. He added that Fields had a successful spell with the Steelers two seasons ago, posting a 4-2 record as a starter.
The Steelers, currently in search of a new head coach following Mike Tomlin‘s departure, face their own quarterback dilemma. They lack a long-term solution at the position, especially if Aaron Rodgers decides against returning. Fields’ previous experience with the Steelers could provide a pathway for both parties to benefit.
In a twist of circumstance, the Steelers had made an offer to Fields during last year’s free agency. However, the Jets presented a more lucrative deal, which Fields ultimately accepted. This offseason, the dynamics could shift once again, allowing Fields another shot at establishing himself as a starter in the league.
The potential competition for the starting quarterback role in Pittsburgh could include Fields, along with Will Howard, Mason Rudolph, and possibly a draft selection. Adding Fields to this mix could enhance the quarterback battle, providing the Steelers with a viable option that combines experience and familiarity.
As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on the Jets as they finalize their decision on Fields and on the Steelers as they navigate their coaching and quarterback situation. The outcome of these developments could significantly impact the landscape of the NFL heading into the next season.
