Golf star Rory McIlroy has stirred conversation ahead of the Dubai Desert Classic by providing a candid assessment of his performance during the 2025 season. Despite achieving remarkable success, including completing his career Grand Slam and winning prestigious tournaments such as The Masters and the Ryder Cup, McIlroy expressed that his play may not have been as consistent as in previous years.

Before teeing off at the tournament this week, McIlroy revealed that he recently conducted a thorough review of his statistics. He noted that his performance in the two seasons preceding 2025—specifically 2023 and 2024—was statistically superior to his most recent campaign. “I went through a stats review maybe three or four weeks ago after Australia, and stats-wise, if you looked at my 2023 and 2024, they were better than my 2025, which is a good thing,” he stated.

While acknowledging the “incredibly high” peaks he reached in 2025, including his victory at Augusta National, McIlroy emphasized the need for improvement in his game. “There are certain things that I’d like to tidy up and get a little bit better at this year. But that’s constantly evolving,” he added.

McIlroy’s Focus on Iron Play Ahead of 2026 Season

As McIlroy prepares for the upcoming golf season, he is concentrating on enhancing his iron play. He acknowledged that while his putting game has consistently ranked among the best in the world, his iron performance declined towards the end of last year after a strong start. “I’ve turned myself into one of the best putters in the world and my iron play maybe fell off at the back end of last year,” McIlroy noted.

His strategy involves identifying areas for improvement and maintaining a high level of play. “It was very good for the first three or four months. So it’s just little things like that, and looking where you can maintain a high level and try to get a little bit better,” he explained.

McIlroy believes that with consistent effort, success will follow. “The wins will come, and getting into contention, and then it’s really about just handling your nerves and the situation at that point,” he concluded.

As golf fans eagerly anticipate his performance at the Dubai Desert Classic, McIlroy’s insights provide a glimpse into the mindset of one of the sport’s leading figures as he aims to build on his impressive career achievements.
