Penguins Rally After Crosby’s Injury, Vow to Fight On
The Pittsburgh Penguins face a significant challenge as they confirmed on February 22, 2026, that captain Sidney Crosby has been placed on injured reserve. This decision follows a lower-body injury sustained on February 18 while he was competing for Canada in the men’s hockey tournament at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics. Crosby is expected to be sidelined for at least four weeks, raising concerns about the team’s prospects for the remainder of the season.
Despite the setback, Penguins players, including veteran winger Bryan Rust, have expressed a defiant attitude, asserting that the team will not give up on its playoff aspirations. “There was a confidence in this room, a confidence when we were 0-0 before the season even started,” Rust remarked, emphasizing the team’s belief in its abilities despite the challenges ahead.
The Penguins entered the season with critics suggesting they might be rebuilding or even “tanking,” with some speculating that Crosby and fellow star Evgeni Malkin could be trade options as the March 6 deadline approaches. Contrary to these predictions, the team has emerged as one of the league’s surprises, finishing the Olympic break with a record of 29-15-12, sitting in the second playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division.
Team’s Determination Remains Strong
Rust continued to convey his team’s steadfast resolve: “That confidence we had at the beginning of the season, it’s still there. There’s a chip on our shoulders right now. We know what the expectations were outside of this room entering the season, but we also know what the expectations were in this room. We believed from the beginning.”
As the final week of February approaches, uncertainty lingers around Crosby’s return. The “at least” designation in his injury report suggests that he may not be at peak performance when he is eligible to return. The Penguins are scheduled to play 19 games over the next 34 days, starting with a home matchup against the New Jersey Devils on February 23.
Teammate Noel Acciari has called on his fellow players to step up during Crosby’s absence, stating, “You don’t replace Sid, obviously. But think about how many times he’s bailed us out this season. We owe it to him to play our best hockey and be in a good position when he comes back.”
Crosby has been a pivotal player for the Penguins this season, leading the team with 59 points and 27 goals prior to his injury. While the Penguins acknowledge the difficulty of replacing such production, they remain confident in their ability to perform without their captain.
“There is no doubt in my mind that we can keep playing like we have been, that we can keep winning,” Rust asserted. “Listen, I know people are going to doubt us. They can doubt us all they want. That’s fine. We intend on proving them wrong.”
As the Penguins navigate this challenging period, their determination to defy expectations serves as a reminder of the resilience that has characterized the franchise for years. With a strong belief in their collective abilities, the team aims to maintain its competitive edge even in the absence of one of its most influential players.
