Salamanca Reopens Bill Flanigan Memorial Ice Pond for Community Enjoyment

The City of Salamanca, New York, is set to officially reopen the Bill Flanigan Memorial Ice Pond on February 2, 2024, welcoming residents and visitors to enjoy a free community celebration from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The event marks the installation of new synthetic ice, a significant upgrade intended to enhance winter recreation and extend the skating season for all.

Community Celebration Features Free Activities

This grand re-opening event is designed to be family-friendly and accessible to all ages. Attendees can take advantage of free skating and skate rentals, as well as enjoy light refreshments. The Salamanca City Central School District will also have a food truck on-site, offering chili and cornbread for guests.

In addition to skating, there will be door prizes awarded to one girl and one boy aged 15 and under, each winning a gift certificate for a pair of ice skates. This festive atmosphere aims to foster community spirit and encourage outdoor activity during the winter months.

Mayor Sandra Magiera expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We are incredibly proud of everyone who played a role in bringing this project to life. What began more than two years ago is a major step forward for our community, and we’re not finished yet.”

The switch to synthetic ice is expected to provide more reliable skating opportunities, minimizing the impact of unpredictable weather conditions that previously led to delays and closures. Mayor Magiera outlined the advantages, explaining that this enhancement allows for a longer skating season, which is a significant benefit for local residents.

Looking ahead, construction will soon commence on a new warming hut, which is part of the ongoing improvements to the ice pond area. Mayor Magiera highlighted the collaborative effort that has made this project possible, stating, “This project is the result of hard work, patience, and collaboration, and we are grateful to everyone who helped make it happen.
