Tiara Thompson Reaches Milestone, Leading West Rowan to Success

MOUNT ULLA — In a significant achievement for West Rowan High School’s girls basketball program, senior guard Tiara Thompson became the 18th player to score 1,000 points during the recent Sam Moir Christmas Classic. Thompson’s journey to this milestone has been unique, marked by challenges that set her apart from her predecessors.

Thompson, who has signed with UNC Wilmington, experienced a hiatus during her junior year, where she did not compete due to transferring to another school. The 5-foot-7 player resumed her quest for 1,000 points in her senior year, expressing her excitement about the accomplishment. “I’m just happy to score 1,000 as a West Rowan Falcon,” she stated. “It definitely means a lot.”

Her head coach, Ashley Poole, has had a rollercoaster of emotions regarding Thompson’s journey. Poole recalls feeling devastated when Thompson initially announced her departure from West Rowan but was overjoyed upon her return. “I’ve never been madder than the day Tiara told me she was leaving West,” Poole said. “I’ve never been happier than the day she told me she was coming back.”

The foundation of Thompson’s talent was evident even in middle school. Poole recognized her potential as a Division I player during Thompson’s eighth-grade year. “The first day she walked into the gym, I could see she was different,” Poole remarked. “Her skill set as a point guard is excellent, but it’s her basketball IQ that separates her.”

Thompson made a strong impact during her freshman year, contributing to the team’s perfect record of 31-0 and securing the 3A state championship. She averaged 12.2 points per game, showcasing her ability to elevate the team’s performance. In the championship game, she recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The following season mirrored her success, as Thompson helped the Falcons achieve another state title with an impressive record of 31-1. She averaged 12.3 points, scoring a high of 18 in the state title game. However, the transition to the following year was challenging, with key players graduating and Thompson transferring to Mount Zion Prep Academy in Lanham, Maryland.

Competing at Mount Zion, Thompson averaged 8.5 points per game, gaining exposure to high-level competition. “It was very good competition,” she said. “We traveled to play teams in other states. It was good exposure and I learned a lot.” Despite her efforts, her performance did not significantly alter her recruitment prospects, as UNC Wilmington remained interested in her from the start.

Thompson’s decision to return to West Rowan for her senior year was driven by her desire for a fulfilling final season and a supportive environment. “Playing for West was best for my family, and the support system I have at West has always been great,” she explained.

Since her return, Thompson has excelled, averaging an impressive 24.2 points per game and leading the scoring charts in Rowan County. She has scored 30 points or more in four games already this season. Her teammate, Aubrey Martin, who was previously sidelined by an injury, has also returned to form, further strengthening the team.

West Rowan currently holds an undefeated record of 12-0. Although not every victory has been straightforward, the Falcons have shown resilience in overcoming challenges during games. In a recent match against Central Davidson, Thompson’s decisive shots, including two three-pointers, were pivotal in securing the win.

“Tiara has scored a lot of points, but her leadership on the floor has been the biggest difference-maker for our team,” Poole noted. “In tough situations, there’s no panic because Tiara will stay calm. It’s like having an assistant coach in a uniform.”

Thompson’s growth as a leader has been a focal point of her development over the past two years. “My skills have improved since I was a sophomore,” she said. “But the biggest way I’ve improved is leadership. I try to keep the young girls calm and give them confidence.”

As the season progresses, Thompson’s contributions are crucial not only for her scoring ability but also for fostering a positive team dynamic. With the Falcons off to a strong start, Thompson’s journey serves as an inspiring story of determination and resilience in high school sports.
